So far I have setup 6 of these for friends and family in a rural Northern California area. These people were either on Hughesnet satellite, bridged Network’s or at the end of DSL lines where max speeds were 3m down and 256k up and streaming Netflix was impossible. Everyone is ecstatic with this device and constantly tell me how happy they are with this setup. Our speed tests in the Sydney CBD produced wildly different results. Our highest speeds were 293.48 Mbps (in Martin Place) and 146.21 Mbps (on the Martin Place side of the Pitt St Mall) with upload speeds of 37Mbps and 23Mbps respectively. Customers can also connect a USB drive, external hard drive or microSD card to turn the Nighthawk M1 into an on-the-go media hub for streaming films and TV shows to multiple connected devices. And that speedy connection can also be used for video communication like Skype and Facetime. Our conversations were smooth as silk. The Nighthawk M1 even managed 105.69 Mbps at Wynyard Station with an impressive 55.88 Mbps upload speed.
On both these plans, customers are able to benefit from data caps – so they never go over their data allowance by accident, as well as UK & Ireland call centre support. Mobile WiFi and fixed wireless devices that are certified have been tested by that carrier and are guaranteed by the carrier to work on their networks. Compatible devices meet the requirements of that carrier and should work on those networks. After getting it going I did a speed test, nothing spectacular, but 47MBPS (Bytes, not bits) down and 25MBPS up isn't too shabby for something not yet fine tuned. I'm no power user so that works for me just fine. I use YouTube and stream music more than I watch TV so this will be just fine. While this is a critical review of some features, please take away that this is an excellent device that far exceeds the capabilities of almost ANY device on the market - and it has unicorn features such as the ethernet port. Plus, Netgear has a reputation of steadfast reliable and stable devices. Yet the speeds we did register were no doubt really impressive and better than the fixed broadband speeds you’d achieve over cable and even on the NBN.
For our review, we didn’t reach speeds anywhere near 1Gbps – but the headroom is there when the network catches up with this device’s stunning capabilities – and it’s not far off.The device can also be used as a travel router so you can share the hotel room’s connection with all of your devices. That upload speed is pretty impressive when you consider the upload speed on our Optus cable home broadband connection rarely gets over 2Mbps.
