About this deal

The Caligula: His reign as the Lord of Craster's Keep involves a great deal of rape, murder, and partying.

Gondor Calls for Aid: The Watch calls for help in the Season 3 finale. Only Stannis Baratheon answered. Likewise, Jon Snow as Lord Commander kept asking for men and supplies from Northern Lords throughout Season 5, even writing a letter to Roose Bolton, putting aside his feelings for revenge in the service of duty. The moment before his assassination, Jon Snow was, in fact, reading many rejection letters from all the Lords he had written to. This makes Smalljon Umber's complaints about the wildlings settled on the Gift highly hypocritical since he and his house had not moved a muscle to help the Watch when they were fighting wildlings and White Walkers. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In Season 4 when he has the heart-to-heart with Jon Snow, and in 5 where he tells him in a sympathetic tone he has a good heart but it will get them all killed. Unfortunately, this is subverted when he thinks killing Jon Snow, who's brought the wildlings inside, is a good idea. Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Snarky and callous on the surface but in truth he's a loyal and reliable friend. Mentor Occupational Hazard: Just like with anyone who becomes a mentor or Parental Substitute to Arya, time catches up with him eventually. Have We Met?: At the Eyrie, Sansa has to remind Waymar's father, Bronze Yohn, that they had met before when he brought Waymar to the Night's Watch and stopped at Winterfell.

Windmill Crusader: This becomes their reputation among Westerosi during the present era as many believed that the mystical creatures that they are fighting to be either just myths or things in the past. Fire-Forged Friends: Him, Jon and Grenn had a very rough start, but they eventually become True Companions along with Sam. In some instances, you might not notice the marchers approaching. Perhaps a gale force wind drowns out the drums or you're simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. No matter the scenario, you must hope that the ghost warriors take mercy on you. If not, you'll hear a shriek of " o-ia!", which means, " let him be pierced," and that'll be the end of you. The Scapegoat: Played with; Tyrion's exiling him to the Wall is partly intended to take the heat away from Joffrey for the massacre of Robert's bastards, and partly so that Tyrion can give Slynt's job to his own ally, Bronn. That being said, there's no doubt at all that Slynt deserves it.

Ungrateful Bastard: How the Night's Watch regard the rest of Westeros, they are protecting them from wildling invasions and are the ones who are standing on guard in-case the White Walkers return, but everyone thinks they are a joke and use them as a penal colony. I did not like Nancy’s mother very much at first, as she kept important details to herself when Nancy, Violet and their father could have helped. I also did not like the mayor because I felt the man was disrespectful and spread slander about certain people’s businesses so that he could get what he wanted. Beattie, J.M. (2001). Policing and Punishment in London in 1660–1750. Great Britain: Oxford University Press. p.169. ISBN 0-19-820867-7. A young ranger, and third son of House Royce of Runestone. He leads Will's ranging party beyond the Wall, and is one of the first victims of the White Walkers. a b Beattie, J. M. (2001). Policing and Punishment in London in 1660–1750. Great Britain: Oxford University Press. p.173. ISBN 0-19-820867-7.Honor Before Reason: His alliance with Craster, providing supplies in exchange for being allowed to rest at Craster's Keep and turning a blind eye to Craster's rampant incest and serial filicide, zigzags this trope quite heavily, depending on how you look at it and how sympathetic you care to be. On the one hand, technically, Mormont is choosing Reason over Honor by burying his disgust at Craster's actions and letting him keep his miserable kingdom in exchange for the help he provides the Rangers. On the other hand, given how Craster's usefulness to the Night's Watch comes off as a case of Informed Attribute, and also that Craster's daughter-wives could still keep the homestead running without Craster and would be genuinely grateful for being freed from him, one can instead look at it as Mormont placing the Honor of the Night's Watch before both Reason and his own Honor. Fatal Flaw: Janos relied too much on his ties with powerful friends rather than his fighting ability or office competence. Papa Wolf: Jeor has grown fond of both Jon and Sam, and has protected them both a few times. In return, they look up to him as a father figure in the Night's Watch. Even Evil Has Standards: We finally see him reach his own personal moral line when he's clearly uncomfortable sacrificing a baby to the White Walkers. He still does it, however.

A recruit at the Wall and also in Jon's friend group. He is assigned to the Rangers after completing training. Non-Action Guy: Pyp's not a fighter and he knows it. He confesses to Sam that he's never used a bow or held a sword that didn't have a blunted edge. The act of 1663 confirmed that watch on its old foundations, and left its effective management to the ward authorities. The important matter to be arranged in the wards was who was going to serve and on what basis. How the money was to be collected to support a force of paid constables, and by whom, were crucial issues. The 1663 Common Council act left it to the ward beadle or a constable and it seems to have been increasingly the case that rather than individuals paying directly for a substitute, when their turn came to serve, the eligible householders were asked to contribute to a watch fund that supported hired man. Forgotten Fallen Friend: His disappearance is noted by the Watch but he's little missed compared to Benjen Stark whose disappearance was the first sign that something weird was going on. Years later, he's remembered by — of all people — Sansa Stark, who reminds Lord Yohn Royce of meeting them when he had escorted Waymar to the Wall.

Night watchmen patrolled the streets from 9 or 10 pm until sunrise, and were expected to examine all suspicious characters. [18] These controls continued in the late 17th century. Guarding the streets to prevent crime, to watch out for fires, and – despite the absence of a formal curfew – to ensure that suspicious and unauthorised people did not prowl around under cover of darkness was still the duty of night watch and the constables who were supposed to command them. I really enjoyed reading this book and the mysteries it provides for the reader, I think this book and its events are very unexpected which keeps the book interesting and the reader on edge. I love how this book is set in the 1900s giving it an old-fashioned, Edwardian tint.
